Our Domain Name Transfer Policy
Transfer of domain names to our servers (change name servers)
Changing name server details is normally the quickest and easiest way to switch web hosting from another company to us. Your existing domain registrar will continue to control your domain name and will be responsible for billing you for domain renewals at their rates. You should note that not all domain registrars will want to retain control of your domain name if you do not host your web site with them, and they may insist on fully transferring your domain name.
Upon purchase of a web hosting account, you will be given domain name transfer instructions and the nameserver details. These will depend on the hosting package you purchase from us. You will need to ask your existing domain name registrar to "change name servers" to the name servers we give you. You may be able to do this yourself if you have DNS control of your domain.
Name server changes should take effect within 24 hours of request. The actual time it takes will depend on how quickly your domain registrar initiates the name server changes.
Full domain transfer (change registrar)
You may wish to fully transfer your domain name to us to save yourself money or simply for the convenience of using the same provider for your domain name and your web hosting. Some domain registrars and web hosting companies insist that you fully transfer a domain name to your new web hosting provider. Once your domain name has been transferred to us, we will be responsible for billing you for domain renewals at our rates.
For transferring gTLDs (.com, .net, .org, .biz, .info) to us, we charge a small fee of £9.99 which covers administration costs involved in the transfer process. There is no transfer fee for .uk domains (.co.uk and .org.uk).
You should note that some providers will require a payment for release of your domain name to us or to any other provider. You should check this with your domain registrar prior to transfer.
To transfer a gTLD domain (.com, .net, .org, .biz, .info) to us (change registrar)
Once we have received your domain transfer instructions and payment, we will request the transfer of your domain name. You (as the admin contact for the domain name) will then receive an email requesting that you confirm the transfer. You will need to follow the instructions in that email to confirm the release with your existing registrar. Failure to follow the instructions within the timescales given will prevent your domain name from being transferred.
To transfer .uk domains (.co.uk and .org.uk) we will ask you to change the tag on your domain name before starting the transfer process. This is generally referred to as the IPS Tag and transfers of this nature generally take approximately 24 hours.
If you are not listed as the admin contact for that domain name, you will need to ask the admin contact (maybe your domain registrar, maybe someone else) to confirm the transfer on your behalf. If you no longer have access to the email address listed in the admin contact details, you will need to ask your existing domain registrar to change that email address for you.
Problems
If you have difficulty transferring your domain name to us, you should in the first instance check your domain registrar's website. If you cannot find the information you need on your domain registrar's website, you should contact their support staff. If you still cannot find the information you need, contact us and we will try and help.
You should bear in mind that when you registered your domain name, you entered into a contract with your domain registrar. If that contract prohibits or restricts domain transfers until you have paid the required domain transfer fees, then you should do so. Your domain registrar may legitimately restrict or prevent domain transfers until you have met the requirements of your contract and paid all due fees.
You should note that you will not be able to fully transfer a gTLD domain name within 60 days following registration, or within the 40 days prior to renewal.
